What Is Incineration Bottom Ash?
Bottom ash is the residue left after solid waste is burned. High-temperature incineration oxidises, decomposes and stabilises the various components of the waste, leaving a slag composed mainly of glass, metals and assorted inorganic material. The quantity produced depends on the composition of the waste. Its principal constituents are manganese dioxide, silicon dioxide, calcium oxide, aluminium oxide, iron oxide and scrap metal, together with a small amount of unburned organic matter. Incineration bottom ash is classified as general solid waste. Once magnetic and gravity separation have extracted scrap steel and other metals, the remaining material can be used as road sub-base, as landfill cover and in the manufacture of non-fired bricks.
