1. Product Overview

The scrap steel preheating system is core energy-saving auxiliary equipment matched with EAF and converter steelmaking processes. It mainly adopts two technical routes: counter-flow heat recovery using high-temperature furnace waste gas, or supplementary combustion heating with blast furnace gas, converter gas and natural gas. It continuously dries and heats cold scrap steel to 400–800℃ before furnace feeding, realizing integrated operation of continuous feeding, preheating and furnace delivery.
The whole system adopts fully enclosed stepped vibrating conveying structure with dynamic sealing to prevent cold air ingress, controlling oxidation loss of scrap steel and decomposing dioxins in flue gas throughout the process. It adapts to high-scrap-ratio smelting technology, solving typical drawbacks of cold scrap feeding including high power consumption, long melting cycle, heavy electrode wear and explosion risks from wet scrap. It has become standard low-carbon upgrading equipment for long-process converters and short-process electric arc furnaces.

2. Detailed Description

This advanced system typically features a heavy-duty vibrating conveyor or a vertical shaft structure integrated with a high-temperature heat exchange chamber. As the scrap moves through the preheating zone, it is subjected to a controlled flow of high-temperature gas, effectively removing moisture and organic contaminants while raising the metal’s internal energy. The system is engineered with high-nickel alloy internal linings and specialized thermal seals to withstand corrosive flue gas and mechanical impact. Automated PLC controls synchronize the scrap feeding speed with the furnace’s melting rate, ensuring a continuous, optimized flow of hot material that reduces thermal shock to the furnace lining and electrode consumption.

  • Scrap steel is conveyed into enclosed preheating tunnel by overhead crane or silo. Stepped vibrating conveyor drives materials forward with automatic tumbling to ensure even heating, with interlayer temperature difference controlled below 50℃.

  • Waste heat recovery route: high-temperature furnace flue gas flows counter-currently through scrap layers to heat materials step by step. CO in exhaust gas is moderately secondary combusted for supplementary energy to maximize heat recovery.

  • Supplementary combustion route: automatic oxy-fuel burners adopt industrial gas as heat source for zoned temperature control. Low-temperature zone removes moisture, high-temperature zone realizes gradient heating, and intelligent regulation avoids over-oxidation caused by local overheating.

  • Multiple dynamic seals at inlet and outlet prevent cold air infiltration. Preheated hot scrap is continuously fed into furnace molten pool for flat-bath stable arc operation, greatly reducing electric load during melting.

  • Post-preheating flue gas passes through quenching, sedimentation and dedusting systems to decompose dioxins at high temperature before qualified emission, realizing coordinated management of heat recycling and environmental protection.
